Ticketed Events FAQ: How Pokémon GO Event Tickets Work
Common questions about Pokémon GO event tickets: what they unlock, global vs in-person tickets, gifting, deadlines, time zones and what to check first.
Event tickets range from a small add-on for a single Community Day to admission for a large in-person festival, and they raise the same questions every time: what exactly does this unlock, when does it run, can I give one to a friend, and what if I can't finish? This FAQ answers those in general terms. Prices, contents and rules change from event to event, so the announcement for the specific event always wins over anything written here.
The basics
What is an event ticket?
A ticket is a one-off purchase tied to your account that unlocks extra content for a single event or, for in-person events, entry to a place at a set date and time. The table shows the usual kinds.
What kinds of ticket are there?

Do I need a ticket to take part in an event at all?
For global events, usually not: most of the spawns and bonuses are open to everyone. In-person events are the exception, since the ticket is your admission to the location. Our page on free events shows what non-ticket holders typically get.
Buying and gifting
Where do I buy a ticket?
The event's announcement explains where its tickets are sold. For global and add-on tickets that has generally been the in-game shop, and some tickets have also been offered through official web pages linked from the announcement. Be wary of any seller the announcement doesn't name, and never hand over your account login to someone who promises tickets or event access in return.
Can I pay with PokéCoins?
Don't assume so. The ticket listing shows how it's priced, and many tickets have been priced in real money rather than coins. Check before relying on a coin balance you've been saving.
Can I buy a ticket for a friend?
Many tickets have had a gifting option for people on your friend list, sometimes with a minimum friendship level. In-person tickets tend to follow their own rules. If a ticket can be gifted, the shop listing usually shows a gift option. If you don't see one, check the event announcement: the ticket may not be giftable, or your friend may not meet the requirements or may already own it.
Can I buy once the event has started?
Tickets have often stayed on sale during the event, but check the listing; buying late leaves less time to finish any Timed Research before its deadline.
Can I get a refund?
Treat tickets as final unless the event's terms say otherwise. If an event is changed or cancelled, the announcement for that event is where any arrangement for ticket holders would be explained.
On the day
How do I activate what I bought?
Ticketed research you bought in the game normally appears in your research journal when the event starts, or shortly after purchase if the event is already running, with nothing to enter. If a ticket came to you as a code, redeem it as its instructions say. If the research doesn't show up, restart the app and check that you're signed in to the account you bought it on, because tickets belong to one account. For in-person events, also check that you're inside the event area during your slot.
What time does a ticketed event start?
Global events often run on local time, so the event starts at the same clock time wherever you are. Others use fixed time slots or a single worldwide start. In-person events follow the host city's local time. If an announcement gives a time in another zone, convert from the announced zone and check whether the date changes, not just the hour.
Does a ticket guarantee shinies or rare Pokémon?
Don't count on it. Unless the listing names a specific reward, any shiny you find through a ticket still comes down to luck. Some tickets have raised shiny odds or added extra encounters for featured Pokémon, and many haven't. If a better chance at something specific is why you'd buy, check that the listing actually says so.
After the event
What if I don't finish the ticketed research?
Look for a timer in your research journal. Ticketed Timed Research can vanish at its deadline along with any unclaimed rewards, while ticketed Special Research usually stays. The five-minute reward audit in our event rewards guide helps you claim everything before a deadline passes.
Do I keep everything I caught?
Yes. Pokémon you caught and items already in your bag stay yours. The time-limited bonuses end, and rewards you haven't claimed from expiring research can go with it.
Before you buy: a quick checklist
- Read what the ticket adds on top of the free event, line by line.
- Confirm the dates, times and time zone, and that you'll actually be free to play.
- For in-person tickets, check travel, the time slot and what happens if plans change.
- Make sure you're signed in to the account you play on.
- Ask whether you'd still be happy with the purchase if you got no shinies at all.
